Do You Know The Utility of Seaweed?

Actually seaweed may be found wherever there is a body of sea water in different parts of the world. In fact, seawood occurs in different varieties. Seawood belongs to a group which consists of a large number of water plants known as algae. Such type of plants do not have true leaves, stems, roots and flowers.

No doubt, they contain a green pigment called chlorophyll. Hence, they are in a position to make their own food. The chlorophyll is generally concealed all the times by other pigments so that is why such type of plants don’t look green and at times some of these plants look brown or red in appearance.

The most common and popular kind of seaweeds belong to the brown algae more particularly in the region of temperate zone. Generally, most of them are long, flat, tough, sharp that fasten to rocks by means of leathery stalks. It is not exaggerated to say that generally alongside the Atlantic Coast they grow upto the extent of not less than twenty feet and the giant kelp of the Pacific Ocean is even longer!

Such types of kelp which are among the seaweeds have been proved useful to man in different ways. People have been utilizing it for the purpose of fertilizer merely because they contain higher amount of percentage of potash. Kelp are also a major source of iodine.

Irish moss is also one of the most useful kinds of seaweeds. Such type of seaweeds are rather rough and leathery in form. It helps in I producing agar in large quantity. In fact, Agar is a colorless substance resembling Jelly, Millions of tons of seaweed which belongs to red algae group are firstly dried and then used as food! They are also being used for obtaining thick texture of soaps and providing bulk in other foods. But, they are not very nourishing.

It is noteworthy that seaweedis also a major and primary source of food for ocean life. Small creatures in the sea feed on it and they in turn become the source of food for larger creatures. Another indispensable advantage of seaweed is that it gives off oxygen which keeps the water pure. Hence, you might have realized the utility and usefulness of seaweed in practical life.
