Social networking is the grouping of people into specific groups, like small rural communities or a neighborhood club. Although social networking is possible in person, especially in the workplace,universities, and high schools, it is most popular online. This is because the internet is filled with millions of individuals who are looking to meet other people, to gather and share first-hand information and experiences about any number of topics that range from golfing, gardening, developing friendships and professional alliances.

The friends and alliances that a person makes are just one of the many benefits of social networking online. Another one of those benefits includes diversity because the internet gives individuals from all around the world access to social networking sites. This means that although you are in India, you could develop an online friendship with someone in Denmark. Social network can act as your online eyes and ears, making you aware of new opportunities, information, and contacts that could benefit you. It is one way of getting a problem analysed from a varied group of people. Social networking sites make it easy to take advantage of the wisdom of crowds to get quick answers. India ranks among the top three countries in the world in social networking.

There are a lot of disadvantages to social networking too. The most prevalent danger though often involves online predators or individuals who claim to be someone that they are not. Active social networking opens you up to being heavily influenced by others. This has its own positive and negative effects. In the end, the individual needs to exercise their own intelligence in getting the most out of social networking.
