Rabinder Nath Tagore

Rabinder Nath Tagore was a literary giant of India. He was born on 6th May 1861 in Bengal. Rabinder Nath was not interested in studying at conventional schools. The schools of his times were dull and stuck to rules. Therefore he was allowed to study at home. He was a person of carefree, dreamy and thoughtful nature. He was a lover of nature. His love for nature started growing with the passage of time.

Tagore was sent to England at the age of sixteen. He did pretty little there and returned to India without anything. He started writing poetry when he was barely fifteen years old. His poems soon began to be recognised in literary circles. They brought him name and fame. These poems were full of deep thoughts and strong passions. They established his merit as a poet of the future.

Nath Tagore was a Nobel Prize winner. His poem “Geetanjali’ won him this prize. He was the first Indian to win this prize. Tagore’s school at Shantiniketan won him international fame. It is a system of education. Here students study in close contact with nature. Tagore wanted to make this school a model of the old Indian tradition. He was awarded knighthood for his contribution to literature and art. When the Britishers killed a large number of innocent Indians at Jalianwala Bagh in 1921, Tagore surrendered this award out of protest.

Tagore was a lover of humanity. He was a citizen of the whole world. He spoke against narrow nationalism. He fought against the British rule in India. Tagore was a great genius. He revealed to the west the greatness of India’s past culture. He left a deep impression on all those who came into contact with him. He was a great artist. He wrote poetry, drama, short stories etc. with equal deftness. He painted pictures and performed music shows equally successfully. His philosophic way of life impressed one and all. He died in 1941.
