Can Islands Disappear?
When a volcano erupts under the sea or when an ocean bed under and pushes some land to the surface of water an island seems to appear out of nowhere. They may stay there for a long time, but can disappear too, when the ocean bed buckles and pulls the land back under the water.
Falcon Island, which is really the peak of a volcano, is about 2,000 miles east of Australia, in the Pacific Ocean. Part of it used to be above the water, but in 1913, it disappeared completely. In 1926, the volcano erupted again, and the island reappeared! And then again after 23 years in 1949 it disappeared!
