What is The Sphinx?
Actually, a sphinx is a monster that was common in the myths of ancient people. Generally, the sphinx most of the people think as the Great Sphinx that stands at Giza, Egypt, near the pyramids. On the other hand, Greeks thought of it as having the head of a woman, the body of a lion wings. As far as Egyptians are concerned, they thought of it as a wingless lion with head and breast of a man.
The Great Sphinx of Egypt which used to be a hill of rock was left over from the building of the Great Pyramid. With the passage of time, it was carved into a big lion consisting of head of a man. It is strange to know that it stands sixty-six feet high having a length of about 240 feet approx. It was deliberately carved with a view to resemble the face of Chephren, a king of the Egyptian dynasty.
Long back, lions used to live in’ the desert adjacent to the valley of the Nile. Egyptians sculptors carved their statues to guard the entrances to temples merely because they were strong and beautiful. Lastly, instead of the head of a lion, they carved the king’s head.
Ages back, in Egypt, the kings were considered to be descender from the god called Ra. On the demise of a king, he himself was supposed to become the sun god virtually. It can be said that the Great Sphinx represents the king as the sun god wild guards the pyramids.
Beyond doubt, Great Sphinx at Giza is largest as compared to any other sphinx. Many kings had their likenesses carved as sphinxes. At one point of time a sphinx Was made with the face of Queen Hatshepsut who ruled the country for years together. This sphinx was given a beard which represents the power of Queen Hatshepsut.
